KILLAM HACIENDA

Freer, Texas

The hacienda is carefully sited alongside a large plateau which characterizes the South Texas ranch property. The residence is comprised of several individual buildings connected by large southeast-facing porches which overlook twenty miles of native Texas landscape and wildlife. Rough stone coping, huge stone fireplace surrounds, tile floors, timber beams, rough-texture plaster, and flagstone walks celebrate regional materials and simple detailing. Local materials and traditional trades are showcased in the hand-crafted lighting, millwork, doors, and furniture. Spaces flow from one to the other and out into the landscape with native planting softening each transition. The hacienda's mixture of traditional and contemporary elements allows it to recall the past while simultaneously celebrating the landscape in a new and seamless way.
